A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki has accused the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of failing to uphold the democratic ideals symbolised by the historic June 12, 1993 Nigerian presidential election struggle.
The criticism was contained in a statement issued on Friday, June 12, 2026, to mark Democracy Day, by the faction’s Interim National Working Committee through its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong.
In the statement, the faction described the June 12, 1993 presidential election as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history, noting that it reflected the collective will of Nigerians across ethnic and religious lines.
According to the party faction, the anniversary should serve as a reminder of the responsibility of governments to protect democratic rights, uphold civil liberties, and ensure a level playing field for opposition parties.
The group, however, alleged that under the current All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government, the lessons of June 12 remain “painfully unlearnt.”
The faction cited reports of security operatives dispersing protesters in Abuja during Democracy Day activities as evidence of what it described as a shrinking democratic space in the country.
It also criticized the Tinubu administration, accusing it of prioritising optics over governance and propaganda over practical policy implementation.
The group further urged Nigerians to remain vigilant as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections, stressing that the sacrifices made during the pro-democracy struggle should not be reduced to ceremonial remembrance.
According to the statement, the memories and sacrifices of June 12 must continue to serve as a warning against anti-democratic actions and a call for stronger democratic consolidation in Nigeria.
