A son of late Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd.) has rejected the Katsina State Government's explanation that his father died from diabetes-related complications while in captivity, and has also dismissed reports that his mother has been released, insisting she remains a hostage. Isyaka Rabe, speaking in an interview with Deutsche Welle Hausa on Sunday, stated that his father had no known history of diabetes or hypertension and that the family does not accept the official account. The late general was abducted alongside his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, on May 30, 2026, along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. The Katsina State Government had announced that General Abubakar died in captivity on Saturday, attributing his death to complications from diabetes and hypertension. However, in the DW interview, Isyaka Rabe said, “Our father was not diabetic and did not suffer from hypertension. People have different opinions about what happened. We believe it was most likely due to a snakebite, while others think he might have stepped on something. From the video, you could see his leg was swollen, but only God knows the true cause of his death”. He also noted, “I truly don't believe it was diabetes. In our view, it was a heart attack. If you look at it, his legs were restrained”.

Isyaka Rabe also contradicted reports that his mother had been released, stating unequivocally that she remains in captivity. “Anyone saying my mother has been released is not telling the truth. As I speak, she is still in their custody,” he said. He also disclosed that the family had no information regarding the recovery of his father's remains. “When I announced the time for my father’s funeral prayer, many people began asking how the body was recovered. I told them I did not know and that they should direct such questions to the government,” he added. Describing his father as a devoutly religious, peace-loving man who lived a modest life, he added that the late general “died a hero”.

The family’s account has intensified demands for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the abduction and death, and for urgent action to secure the release of Hajiya Amina Abubakar, who continues to be held by the abductors.
