The Governing Council of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) has dismissed five staff members, including two professors, for alleged sexual abuse, harassment, intimidation, extortion, and other forms of misconduct. The decision was taken during the 122nd meeting of the Governing Council held on June 12, 2026, and announced on June 14.
A statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Harrison Madubueze, identified the dismissed staff as: Professor C. C. Nwabachili, the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Law; Professor Chike Osegbue of the Department of Political Science; Dr. I. H. Iheukwumere and Mr. Emeka Nwabunnia, both from the Department of Microbiology; and Mrs. Ifeoma Kakulu, a Principal Assistant Registrar who served as the Examination Officer of the Faculty of Law at the time of the alleged offenses.
The statement clarified that the dismissals, effective immediately, followed a rigorous investigation that found the individuals culpable of “offences ranging from sexual abuse and harassment to intimidation, extortion, and ethical misconduct.”
Reaffirming its commitment to discipline, the Council warned that any actions tarnishing the university’s reputation would face severe consequences, and promised to ensure a safe, accountable, and forward-thinking atmosphere. The disciplinary action underscores the institution’s resolve to uphold ethical standards and maintain public confidence.
