In a major victory against insecurity in Nigeria's North-West, troops of the 8 Division Garrison, Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have successfully ambushed and disrupted a planned terrorist attack in Zamfara State. The operation, which took place on the night of June 23, 2026, at Kwanar Jollof in Jangeru village, Shinkafi Local Government Area, forced the assailants to flee under heavy fire, abandoning a significant cache of weapons and equipment intended for a large-scale operation.

Acting on actionable intelligence regarding the movement of armed terrorists along the Kwanar Jollof axis, the troops strategically positioned themselves and laid a deadly ambush. According to security sources, upon sighting the advancing terrorists, the troops immediately engaged them with overwhelming firepower, triggering a fierce exchange that left the criminals with no option but to retreat in disarray into nearby forests.

The successful operation disrupted what was likely a major assault on local communities and yielded a trove of recovered items. Among the abandoned equipment were one PKT machine gun, a cache of ammunition, two motorcycles, and chains believed to have been intended for restraining kidnapped victims. Most alarmingly, the troops recovered eight pairs of military uniforms, raising serious concerns that the terrorists may have planned to disguise themselves as soldiers to infiltrate communities or carry out attacks with impunity.

"The successful operation disrupted the terrorists' plans to attack the area and further demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-led military operations," a security source told Zagazola Makama. The military has confirmed that troops are continuing exploitation operations in the area to track down the fleeing suspects and forestall further threats to residents.

This latest success is part of sustained offensive operations being conducted by Operation FANSAN YAMMA across Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and other states in the North-West to dismantle terrorist networks, disrupt planned attacks, and restore peace to affected communities. Security analysts say the operation highlights the growing effectiveness of intelligence-driven military actions and the increasing collaboration between conventional troops and hybrid forces in denying terrorists freedom of movement across the region.

The recovery of the military uniforms is particularly concerning, as it suggests a growing trend among terrorist groups to impersonate security personnel to evade detection and gain access to targeted communities. This tactic has been used in previous attacks across the North-West, making it increasingly difficult for civilians to distinguish between genuine security forces and armed criminals.

The military has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations against terrorists and other criminal elements across the North-West region. The operation comes amid intensified military offensives targeting terrorist hideouts, logistics networks, and transit corridors used by armed groups responsible for kidnappings, cattle rustling, and attacks on rural communities. For the residents of Shinkafi and surrounding areas, the successful ambush is a welcome reprieve from the terror that has plagued their communities. However, with the terrorists still at large, the military's message is clear: the hunt is far from over.
