The Imo State Police Command has identified and detained six officers captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting two young men in Ikeduru Local Government Area, sparking widespread outrage and prompting an immediate disciplinary investigation. The incident, which occurred on June 22, 2026, at Nduhobokwe, Uzoagba, in Ikeduru LGA, came to the attention of the command after a video circulated widely on social media, showing uniformed officers carrying firearms and taking turns flogging two men on an untarred road. The footage, shared by X user @ChidiebubeMedia, quickly attracted condemnation and renewed calls for police accountability.
Following a preliminary review, the command identified the officers involved as Inspector Ugochukwu Ibe, Inspector Nwachi Chimezie, Sergeant Ugoezuhu Austin, Corporal Michael Obi, Corporal Ebuka Onwuegbu, and Corporal Amos Sunny. In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, the command confirmed that the officers have been taken into custody pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso.
The statement emphasized that the conduct displayed in the viral video is inconsistent with the values, ethics, and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force. CP Bosso has directed a thorough investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the misconduct, and disciplinary procedures have been initiated in line with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force. The command reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct, unprofessional behaviour, and violations of citizens' rights, assuring the public that the investigation would be conducted transparently and that the outcome would be made public upon conclusion.
The incident has reignited conversations about police accountability, human rights, and the need for continued reforms within Nigeria's law enforcement system. It also comes amid heightened scrutiny of police conduct following the #EndSARS protests and numerous viral clips of abuse that have fractured trust between citizens and law enforcement. In a previous case in September 2024, the Imo State Police Command had launched an investigation into a similar viral video showing officers in a violent confrontation with a man. The latest incident underscores the persistent challenges in ensuring police professionalism and respect for citizens' rights.
As the investigation and disciplinary process unfold, the Imo State Police Command has urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course. The command reiterated its commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ensuring that any officer found culpable faces the full weight of disciplinary action. The outcome of the case will be closely watched by civil society organisations and human rights advocates who have long called for greater accountability and transparency in police operations across Nigeria.
