A young man in his early twenties has died in northern Ghana after stabbing himself in front of a crowd during the annual Fire Festival in Salaga, in a misguided attempt to prove supernatural invulnerability.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, during a youth-organised event held as part of the traditional Fire Festival (Jambaon) celebrations in Salaga, located in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region. The deceased, popularly known within the community as Sheihu, reportedly stepped forward before a gathering of spectators with a sharp knife, intending to demonstrate his supposed immunity to weapons.

According to multiple eyewitness accounts, Sheihu used the knife on himself in an apparent attempt to prove his supernatural abilities. However, the routine demonstration went horribly wrong when the blade pierced his body, inflicting deep, life-threatening injuries. The act, which was intended to showcase spiritual prowess, left him critically wounded before the stunned crowd.

Amidst the ensuing panic, onlookers rushed the bleeding youth to the Salaga Government Hospital in a desperate bid to save his life. Medical officers, however, pronounced him dead shortly upon arrival at the facility. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he could not be saved.

The incident has thrown the Salaga community into total shock, with residents expressing grief and disbelief over the circumstances surrounding the young man's death. Many have voiced concerns regarding the risks associated with such dangerous public demonstrations. The tragedy has cast a pall over this year's Fire Festival celebrations, a major cultural event that attracts large crowds and features various traditional displays and activities across northern Ghana.

Authorities are expected to investigate the matter to establish the exact circumstances that led to the incident. Meanwhile, community leaders have urged young people to refrain from engaging in dangerous acts that could endanger their lives.

The death of Sheihu serves as a stark reminder of the tragic consequences that can arise when individuals attempt to prove supernatural abilities through self-harm. As the Salaga community mourns the loss of one of its young members, the incident has ignited broader discussions among residents and local authorities about safety protocols for traditional festival displays.
