The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old suspected armed robber, Samson Onilewaji, after he was allegedly found in possession of a suspected human right hand, firearms, a Point of Sale (POS) terminal machine, and multiple Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Lekki-Epe Expressway. The arrest was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday, June 26, 2026, by the Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, who confirmed that the suspect was apprehended after police operatives intercepted an unregistered commercial shuttle bus carrying six occupants and conducted a comprehensive search of the vehicle and its passengers. The discovery of a human body part among the recovered items has sent shockwaves through the community and raised urgent questions about the extent of the suspect's alleged criminal activities.

According to the police statement, the items recovered from the suspect included a suspected human right hand, two locally made pistols, one live cartridge, two axes, a POS terminal machine, and five ATM cards. Preliminary investigations revealed that Onilewaji allegedly confessed to robbing three persons and dispossessing them of their valuables, including the recovered POS machine and ATM cards. The police said efforts are ongoing to identify and contact the victims to facilitate the return of the recovered items to their rightful owners. The Command also disclosed that investigators are working to establish the identity of the owner of the suspected human hand and unravel the circumstances surrounding its possession and intended use.

The arrest is part of the Lagos State Police Command's intensified stop-and-search operations and other security measures across major roads and communities to curb armed robbery, the proliferation of illegal firearms, and other violent crimes. In recent months, the command has announced a series of arrests of suspected criminals and the recovery of weapons in separate operations across the state. The discovery of a human body part in this case, however, has added a particularly disturbing dimension to the ongoing crackdown, highlighting the depths of criminality that police are confronting. According to the police, the suspect will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Reacting to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Olaiwola Fatai, reaffirmed the Command's resolve to sustain its crackdown on armed robbery and other violent crimes across the state. He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely and credible information to security agencies, noting that public cooperation remains critical to preventing crime and ensuring the safety and security of lives and property throughout Lagos State. The police also encouraged members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities through the command's emergency lines. As investigations continue, the arrest of Samson Onilewaji stands as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking on the roads and the importance of robust police presence in safeguarding communities.
