A middle-aged man is currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Anka, Zamfara State, after he was shot by suspected bandits along the Gummi–Anka road hours ago. The identity of the victim has not yet been confirmed, though reports suggest he may be from Zurmi Local Government Area. The attack adds to the growing list of violent incidents on Zamfara's highways, where armed bandits have increasingly targeted travellers, farmers, and commuters.
The Gummi–Anka road has become a hotspot for bandit activity in recent months. On June 14, 2026, the military's Operation FANSAN YAMMA successfully rescued kidnapped victims in the area, and just last month, troops killed several bandits in a fierce encounter on the same route. However, the persistence of attacks along the road underscores the ongoing security challenges facing Zamfara State, where armed groups have continued to terrorise communities despite sustained military operations.
Sources at the Anka General Hospital confirmed that the man was brought in with gunshot wounds and is currently receiving emergency treatment. Medical personnel are working to stabilise his condition, but his identity remains unknown as he had no identification on him at the time of admission. Community leaders and residents have been urged to assist in identifying the victim so that his family can be notified. Hospital authorities have also appealed to the public to share information that could help locate his relatives.
The attack comes at a time when security agencies are intensifying efforts to combat banditry in Zamfara. On Friday, Governor Dauda Lawal held a meeting with security agencies to address the worsening situation, directing them to redouble their efforts and assuring them of his administration's full support. "We are committed to ensuring the security of lives and property in Zamfara State," the governor said. However, residents have expressed frustration over the continued attacks, calling for more decisive action from both the state and federal governments.
As the injured man fights for his life, the community and security agencies are working to locate his family, hoping that a swift identification will bring some comfort in the midst of this tragedy. The incident also highlights the human cost of the insecurity that has plagued the region for years, with countless families torn apart and communities living in constant fear. The public is urged to share this information widely to help the victim's family locate him. Prayers are offered for his speedy recovery and for an end to the relentless insecurity that continues to threaten innocent lives across Nigeria.
