A commercial vehicle carrying traders struck a landmine on the Sabon Birni–Kurawa road in Sokoto State on the morning of Sunday, June 28, 2026. The explosive device was allegedly planted by bandits loyal to notorious kingpin Bello Turji and was reportedly intended for troops responding to an operation in the area. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, but several passengers sustained injuries and are receiving treatment.

This incident comes amid a surge in the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) by bandit groups in the North-West. On June 20, 2026, a military vehicle struck a landmine on the Bargaja road in Isa Local Government Area, killing four soldiers. Bello Turji later claimed responsibility for that attack, which targeted troops responding to a distress call. Turji has also expanded his arsenal to include sophisticated weapons and night-vision devices.

The Sabon Birni–Kurawa corridor has experienced repeated attacks. In November 2025, gunmen killed two people and abducted 15 others, including nursing mothers, in Kurawa village. In June 2026, bandits imposed fresh extortion levies on at least 26 rural communities in Sabon Birni LGA. Security forces continue clearance operations under Operation Fansan Yamma, while the military strengthens patrols and deploys Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams along high-risk routes.
