Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have arrested a suspected operative of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) over an alleged plot to attack two military formations in Borno State, in an intelligence-led operation that dealt a significant blow to the terrorist group's plans in the North-East. The suspect, identified as Muhammad Shuaibu, was apprehended by troops of the 212 Battalion deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Chabbol at about 7:55 a.m. on June 26, 2026, following credible human intelligence on an impending terrorist attack.

According to military sources quoted by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, Shuaibu was arrested during a routine perimeter patrol approximately 500 metres ahead of the anti-vehicle ditch protecting the base. Preliminary investigations linked the suspect to a planned assault on the 199 Special Forces Battalion, popularly known as Mosquito Camp, and the Forward Operating Base in Chabbol. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted that an attack had been planned and disclosed that the terrorists intended to proceed with the operation regardless of his arrest.

The military said the timely arrest enabled troops to reinforce security around the targeted formations and strengthen defensive measures against any attempted attack. Shuaibu has since been handed over to the 7 Military Intelligence Brigade for further investigation. The arrest forms part of ongoing intelligence-driven operations by Operation Hadin Kai aimed at disrupting terrorist plots, dismantling insurgent networks and enhancing the security of military formations across the North-East.

The operation underscores the military's growing capacity to act on intelligence and preempt attacks, even as ISWAP continues to pose a significant threat to security forces and civilian populations in the Lake Chad region. The 199 Special Forces Battalion, known as Mosquito Camp, and FOB Chabbol are strategic military assets in Borno State, and a successful attack on either formation would have dealt a severe blow to counter-insurgency efforts. The arrest of Shuaibu has not only thwarted a potentially deadly assault but also provided valuable intelligence that could lead to the dismantling of ISWAP's operational networks in the area.
