Aisha Hanan Buhari, founder and chief executive officer of the Hanan Buhari Foundation, has been honoured as one of Africa’s 100 Most Notable Peace Icons, a recognition presented at the 100 Most Notable Africans Leadership and Business Summit 2026 held in Marrakech, Morocco. The award, organised by the Davdan Peace and Advocacy Foundation, recognises African leaders, entrepreneurs and changemakers for their contributions to peacebuilding, humanitarian service, leadership and sustainable development.

Aisha, a daughter of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, received the award in recognition of her humanitarian work, advocacy for social justice and community empowerment through her foundation. The summit, which took place from June 26 to 28, 2026, at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès Marrakech, drew influential leaders, government officials, captains of industry, diplomats, investors, policymakers and innovators from across Africa and beyond. Other notable personalities honoured included Zenith Bank’s Group Managing Director Dr. Adaora Umeoji, Fidelity Bank’s Managing Director Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, Nigerian superstar Ayo Balogun (Wizkid), and former Chairperson of the African Union Commission Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, among others.

Speaking after receiving the award, Aisha described the recognition as both an honour and a responsibility. “Receiving this honour is both a privilege and a responsibility,” she said. “It serves as a reminder that meaningful change is possible when compassion, dedication, and service guide our actions”. She said the recognition reflected the commitment of the foundation’s staff, partners, volunteers and supporters, adding that leadership should be measured by service to humanity, advocacy for justice and support for vulnerable communities.

Aisha dedicated the award to her late father, the former president, saying his values inspired her commitment to public service. “I dedicate this recognition to my late father, may Allah be pleased with him, and to every individual who continues to work courageously for positive change, often without recognition or reward,” she said. She also acknowledged the support of her husband, Muhammad Turad Sha’aban, co-founder of the Hanan Buhari Foundation, saying his leadership had contributed to the organisation’s growth and humanitarian outreach. The foundation said it would continue to expand its programmes focused on sustainable development, community empowerment and humanitarian intervention across Nigeria and beyond.
