The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a middle-aged man for allegedly stabbing his father, a retired Army Captain, to death in a violent confrontation sparked by a family dispute over the sale of the deceased's property. The incident occurred on Saturday, 4 July 2026, at Oro Ekpo Estate in the Ada George area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, sending shockwaves through the community and leaving residents in deep mourning.

The victim has been identified as retired Captain David Nwoke, a respected landlord and former military officer. According to police sources and eyewitness accounts, the suspect, whose identity has not been released by authorities, allegedly attacked his father inside his residence, inflicting multiple stab wounds. Despite efforts by neighbours and security personnel to save him, Captain Nwoke succumbed to his injuries before medical assistance could arrive.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, ASP Blessing Agabe, said the suspect is currently in police custody while detectives continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing. "The suspect has been arrested and is in our custody. Investigation is ongoing," Agabe stated.

According to an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity, the killing may have been the culmination of a prolonged family disagreement. The source alleged that the late retired military officer had decided to dispose of his property following persistent family-related issues. The decision reportedly angered his son after he discovered that the house where they both lived had already been sold. “The father wanted to sell the house because of family problems. When the son got to know about the sale, he allegedly confronted him, and the argument turned violent,” the resident claimed.

Security personnel stationed at the estate gate raised the alarm after learning that one of the landlords had been attacked inside his residence. Neighbours and security operatives rushed to the house, where they found the retired army officer lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds allegedly inflicted by his son. Despite desperate efforts to save him, Captain Nwoke reportedly died before medical help could make any difference.

The police have not officially confirmed the motive behind the killing, stressing that investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact circumstances that led to the incident. Authorities have also not released the identity of the suspect, while the remains of the deceased are expected to undergo an autopsy as part of the investigation before any formal charges are filed.

The tragic incident has thrown the Oro Ekpo Estate community into mourning, with residents describing the late Captain Nwoke as a respected landlord whose sudden and violent death has left many devastated. Police have appealed to members of the public to remain calm and refrain from speculating on the motive for the killing until investigations are concluded.

The killing has once again highlighted the deadly consequences of family disputes over property, a recurring issue in many Nigerian communities where land and inheritance conflicts often escalate into violence. As investigations continue, the suspect remains in police custody, and authorities have assured the public that justice will be served.
