Armed gunmen have attacked Abugi, Kuchinda and Mikugi communities in Kupa Kingdom, Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, in what the state government has described as a reprisal attack that has left multiple residents dead and heightened tension across the area. The violence, which erupted on Thursday, August 6, 2026, followed the alleged killing of an unarmed herder by a member of a local vigilante group on suspicion of cattle rustling, according to preliminary reports from security agencies.
The attack saw heavily armed assailants invade the three communities in Kupa Kingdom, firing sporadically and targeting innocent residents in what authorities described as a coordinated reprisal operation. While the exact number of casualties remains unclear, multiple sources confirmed that more than five persons were killed, with some reports indicating that the death toll could be significantly higher. The attackers, believed to be armed persons acting in retaliation for the herder's death, moved through the communities, leaving families in mourning and many residents displaced.
The Kogi State Government swiftly condemned the attacks, with Commissioner for Information and Communications Kingsley Fanwo describing the killings as "tragic, senseless and unacceptable". In a statement issued on Thursday, Fanwo conveyed Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo's heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Kupa Kingdom, praying for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased.
Governor Ododo has directed security agencies to immediately take full control of the affected communities, restore peace, and prevent any further breakdown of law and order. He has ordered the immediate arrest of the vigilante member alleged to have killed the herder, as well as all those responsible for the reprisal attack, including the leader of the Hybrid Vigilante Group suspected of coordinating the assault. "The Kogi State Government condemns in the strongest terms both the killing of the unarmed herder and the subsequent reprisal attack. These are criminal acts that have no place in our society," Fanwo stated.
The Commissioner assured the public that anyone found to have participated in either incident, regardless of status or ethnic affiliation, would face the full weight of the law. He appealed to residents to remain calm, resist the temptation of reprisals, and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information to aid ongoing investigations.
The state government said it is working closely with security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to restore lasting peace across Kupa Kingdom and rebuild confidence among the affected communities. The government reiterated its commitment to protecting every resident of Kogi State, stressing that it would continue to uphold justice, strengthen peaceful coexistence, and ensure that criminals have no hiding place anywhere in the state.
The Kupa Kingdom attacks have once again highlighted the dangerous cycle of violence that often follows communal disputes in Nigeria's North-Central region, where farmer-herder conflicts and cattle rustling accusations frequently escalate into deadly reprisal attacks. As the government moves to restore peace and bring perpetrators to justice, residents of the affected communities are left to mourn their dead and pray for an end to the violence that has turned their homes into a battlefield.
