Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has urged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployed to the state to uphold the law, embrace peaceful coexistence, and contribute positively to national development, as the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II orientation course officially commenced at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Ede. The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Youth Affairs, Moshood Olagunju, gave the charge on Friday, August 7, 2026, during the swearing-in and official opening ceremony of the three-week orientation programme.
Addressing the corps members, Governor Adeleke stressed the importance of resolving grievances through lawful and constitutional channels, warning them against taking the law into their own hands. He urged them to remain committed to the National Pledge and Oath of Allegiance administered at the ceremony, describing the oath as a sacred bond that should guide their conduct throughout their service year. "I urge you therefore, to stay true to the National Pledge and Oath of Allegiance you swore to before witnesses today," Adeleke said. He further cautioned the corps members against actions capable of misleading younger Nigerians who may regard them as role models, emphasising the responsibility that comes with their status as graduates and nation-builders.
The governor also encouraged the corps members to respect ethnic, cultural, and other differences among themselves while building relationships based on unity, tolerance, and mutual respect. He called on them to treat one another as brothers and sisters, irrespective of their backgrounds. "Make friends and relate freely with one another, cherishing and respecting your differences while diligently discovering your similarities. Corps members should treat one another as brothers and sisters," he said. Adeleke assured the corps members that his administration would continue to support the NYSC scheme in Osun, particularly in the areas of their welfare and safety throughout their service year, describing Osun as a "beautiful and relatively peaceful State" with peace-loving and accommodating people.
The NYSC Osun State Coordinator, Ekeng Ita Kubiangha, disclosed that 3,000 corps members had been registered for the orientation programme as of midnight on Thursday, August 6, 2026, including those dislodged from Lagos State. He said the three-week orientation course was designed to prepare corps members for the challenges of national service through physical fitness, lectures, mental alertness, social activities, sporting activities, and the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme. Kubiangha also drew the attention of the corps members to the forthcoming Osun governorship election, scheduled for August 15, 2026, during which some corps members would serve as ad hoc personnel for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
"As you settle into Camp activities, it is important to draw your attention to the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Osun State in which your predecessors will be participating as adhoc staff of the INEC," Kubiangha said. He revealed that before the commencement of the orientation course, he and his team had visited all 27 local government areas where corps members are currently deployed to sensitise them on their electoral duties and roles in ensuring a free, fair, and credible election. The sensitisation meetings, he said, were attended by INEC officials, Divisional Police Officers, and officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Department of State Services. Kubiangha urged the corps members to join the scheme in praying for the safety and peaceful conduct of the exercise across the state.
The orientation programme, which began on Wednesday, August 6, and will run until Tuesday, August 25, 2026, is expected to equip the corps members with the skills, discipline, and patriotic values needed for their one-year mandatory national service. As the state prepares for the crucial governorship election, the governor's charge to the corps members to remain law-abiding and neutral underscores the critical role they will play in ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process.
