The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Benin Zonal Directorate, has arrested one Odigie Moses, a self-acclaimed spiritualist, for allegedly blackmailing an Indian woman to the tune of $1,100. The suspect was arrested on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, in Ekpoma, Edo State.
According to the EFCC, the suspect misrepresented himself on Zelle, a social media platform, as possessing spiritual healing powers. He was contacted by the victim, an Indian woman who sought spiritual intervention for what she described as life-threatening challenges. The suspect subsequently deceived her into taking a naked spiritual bath, which he recorded live without her permission. He then blackmailed her, threatening to release the video unless she paid him. The EFCC said the victim paid $1,100 to prevent the release of her nudity to the public. The suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The EFCC has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
The case highlights the growing threat of sextortion and online scams, where fraudsters exploit social media platforms to target unsuspecting victims with false promises of spiritual intervention. The EFCC has intensified its crackdown on cybercrime, with several arrests and convictions recorded in recent months. The agency has also warned the public against falling for online scams and has urged victims to report incidents to the appropriate authorities.
