A devastating road crash along the Enagi–Mokwa Road in Niger State has claimed the lives of 15 passengers, with 25 others sustaining injuries after two buses collided head-on and burst into flames on the evening of Saturday, August 8, 2026. The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the tragedy on Sunday, August 9, attributing the accident to wrongful overtaking at a bend and excessive speeding – a familiar refrain on a route that has become synonymous with tragedy.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Niger State, Aishatu Sa'adu, confirmed that the accident involved two buses travelling in the same direction along the Enagi–Costain Duma Road in Mokwa Local Government Area. According to her account, one of the buses attempted to overtake at a sharp bend, resulting in a collision that caused both vehicles to be engulfed in flames. The fire spread rapidly, trapping passengers inside and leaving 15 people with no chance of escape. Sa'adu attributed the crash to "speeding and wrongfully overtaking," and advised motorists to "always maintain a good speed limit and avoid wrongful overtaking".
Eyewitness Ahmed Ndagana, who confirmed the incident to journalists, said the vehicle was engulfed in flames shortly after the crash, leaving the occupants with little chance of escape. He said about 15 passengers were burnt to death inside the vehicle, while the circumstances surrounding the crash were still being established. Ndagana urged motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to exercise greater caution when navigating sharp bends, especially during the rainy season when road conditions can become hazardous. He commended the FRSC and local volunteers for their prompt intervention following the crash. According to Ndagana, the remains of the 15 victims were later given a mass burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The 25 injured victims were evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre in Bida and the General Hospital in Kutigi for treatment. As of the time of filing this report, details about the identities of the victims and the exact cause of the crash were not immediately available. The incident has renewed concerns over the dangers posed by sharp bends and difficult road conditions, particularly during the rainy season, and the need for motorists to exercise greater caution.
