A suspected vandal met a gruesome end on Saturday, August 8, 2026, when a 330kV transmission tower collapsed along the Ughelli–Benin transmission line in Delta State, crushing him to death between the tower members. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, saying its linesmen from the Delta Sub-Region Lines Maintenance Department discovered the body during an intensive patrol following a power outage.
According to TCN, the Ughelli–Benin 330kV line tripped off due to an earth fault. The maintenance team traced the fault to Tower 101, which had collapsed. Upon arrival, the patrol team found the body of a suspected vandal crushed between the tower members. Further inspection of the area revealed that Tower 101 on the adjacent Ughelli–Sapele 330kV transmission line had also been seriously vandalised, though it was still standing at the time of the report.
TCN strongly condemned the act of vandalism and issued a stern warning about the dangers of tampering with power infrastructure. “This incident is a tragic reminder of the extreme dangers of tampering with power infrastructure,” the company said. “Vandalism not only leads to power outages and damage to national assets, it also endangers lives”. TCN appealed to host communities and members of the public to remain vigilant around power installations and to report any suspicious activities to security agencies or the nearest TCN office. “The fight against the vandalism of power infrastructure is one that must be inclusive. All hands must be on deck for this fight to be won,” the company stated. The company described the protection of electricity infrastructure as a civic responsibility, adding: “Stop the vandals, or they will stop power for us all”.
The incident highlights the persistent and dangerous challenge of vandalism targeting Nigeria's power transmission infrastructure. The Ughelli–Benin line is a critical corridor for bulk power transmission in the South-South region, and attacks on such installations frequently result in widespread blackouts and significant economic losses. Saturday's event serves as a tragic illustration of the lethal consequences that can result from such criminal acts, not only for the national grid but for the perpetrators themselves.
