A wave of unease has swept through the quiet farming community of Igbarukun in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State after armed bandits struck on the night of Monday, August 10, 2026, in a failed kidnapping attempt that saw the intended victim escape from his abductors. The incident, which occurred under the cover of darkness, has once again exposed the vulnerability of rural communities in the state's western flank, where criminal gangs have increasingly turned to abduction as a lucrative enterprise.
According to a local source who spoke to this reporter on condition of anonymity, the victim was accosted by the armed men at about 10:00 p.m. on Monday. The assailants, who were reportedly armed with guns and machetes, attempted to force the man into the bush. In June 2026, gunmen stormed the Ijalu area of Egbe, abducting a mother and her toddler, though troops later rescued them.
The broader security situation in Kogi State has been deteriorating, with bandits and kidnappers increasingly emboldened. On Sunday, August 9, a Peace Mass Transit bus was intercepted along the Itobe–Anyigba Highway in Ofu Local Government Area, with 16 passengers taken into the bush. Security forces mounted a joint operation involving the police, the 12 Brigade Nigerian Army, the DSS, the NSCDC, local vigilantes and auxiliary forces. A fierce gun battle ensued, resulting in the neutralisation of several abductors, though one local vigilante was killed and a police officer sustained gunshot injuries. All 16 victims were rescued unharmed.
