A bloody clash between two rival cult groups in the Imo area of Ilesa, Osun State, has left three people dead, throwing the ancient city into fresh turmoil just days before Saturday's high-stakes governorship election. The incident, which occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, has drawn an immediate and robust response from security forces, with the Commissioner of Police in charge of the 2026 Osun State Governorship Election, CP Samuel Erale Etaifo, ordering the deployment of operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to the area to prevent further escalation, apprehend those responsible and restore calm.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the fatalities in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 11, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi. According to the statement, the clash involved suspected members of the Aiye and Eiye confraternities, two rival cult groups with a long and bloody history of supremacy battles in Ilesa and its environs. The three victims, identified only as Idowu, Yinka and Eja, were reportedly shot dead during the confrontation. Preliminary investigations have commenced, and four expended cartridges and two Android mobile phones were recovered from the scene.
The timing of the violence has inevitably raised questions about possible political undertones, given that Osun State is in the final stretch of a fiercely contested gubernatorial campaign. The August 15 election pits incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party against Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress and other candidates. The political temperature has been dangerously high in recent weeks, with both major parties trading allegations of violence, intimidation and electoral malpractice. Just days before the Ilesa cult clash, the APC and Accord Party had exchanged bitter accusations over a shooting incident during a campaign rally in the city that left several people hospitalised.
The link between cultism and political violence in Osun State is not new. The police have previously acknowledged the entanglement of cult groups and political thuggery, with the command in June 2026 arresting eight suspected cultists and political thugs ahead of the governorship election. In March 2026, the police attributed a shooting incident in Ilesa to a clash between rival cult groups and dismissed earlier claims linking the violence to clashes between supporters of political parties. However, a group, Osun Masterminds, had earlier raised the alarm over what it described as "increasing reports of cult-related violence, armed political thuggery and clashes linked to the election season," warning that Ilesa and Ile-Ife were living under "growing anxiety as confrontations involving rival political groups and cult gangs increasingly occur in public places."
Adding a dramatic twist to the narrative, Afrobeat superstar Davido Adeleke, who is also the nephew of Governor Adeleke, took to his X handle on Monday night to allege that the murdered victims were members of the Accord Party. "SERIOUS SHOOTING IN ILESA …. AFTER 3 ACCORD PARTY MEMBER CONFIRM DEAD … THESE PPLE R SO PUSSY," Davido wrote. His comment immediately ignited a firestorm of debate on social media, with supporters of the APC and the Accord Party trading accusations over who was responsible for the bloodshed. Davido's allegation, however, remains unverified, and the police have not officially linked the cult clash to any political party or its members. The police statement on the incident made no mention of political affiliation, focusing instead on the cult rivalry between the Aiye and Eiye groups.
The violence in Ilesa has prompted an urgent security response. CP Etaifo has directed the VCRU operatives and other tactical teams to intensify patrols, surveillance and intelligence-led operations within Ilesa and adjoining areas, particularly around identified flashpoints, to forestall any reprisal attack. The police have warned members of rival cult groups and other criminal elements against taking advantage of the incident to cause further violence, stating that anyone found engaging in cult-related violence, reprisal attacks or unlawful possession of firearms will be arrested and prosecuted.
The Ilesa cult clash is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have plagued Osun State in the run-up to the election. According to a report by Kimpact Development Initiative, 44 election-related violent incidents resulting in 13 fatalities were recorded in Osun between October 2025 and June 2026. The Nigeria Police Force has documented at least 30 politically motivated killings in the state, heightening concerns about voter safety and the possibility of further violence before and during the poll. The convergence of cult rivalry and political contestation has created a volatile mix that security forces are struggling to contain.
Whether the Monday night clash in Ilesa was purely a cult supremacy battle or a politically motivated attack disguised as cult violence remains an open question. What is certain is that three families are now in mourning, and a community is on edge, just days before voters are expected to go to the polls. The police have appealed to residents of Ilesa to remain calm and law-abiding, avoid spreading unverified information, and promptly report suspicious movements or activities. As the investigation continues and security forces intensify their presence, the people of Ilesa are left hoping that this latest tragedy will not be the prelude to further bloodshed in the final days of a campaign that has already exacted too heavy a toll.
