Popular Nigerian comedian and content creator, Chukwuebuka Amuzie, better known as Brain Jotter, has raised an urgent alarm after he was allegedly harassed and extorted by suspected street thugs while driving in Lagos, an incident that has once again thrust the activities of “area boys” into the national spotlight and sparked renewed outrage over the safety of motorists in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
In a video posted on his official Instagram page on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, Brain Jotter showed a group of men confronting him on a Lagos road, reportedly blocking his vehicle and demanding money before allowing him to continue his journey. The comedian, visibly frustrated, captioned the video with a biting sarcastic remark: “Nigerian zoo keepers are the worst. We lack good wildlife and they let a lion escape from the zoo. This is sad”.
The footage quickly went viral, drawing widespread condemnation from fans and followers who expressed anger over the growing menace of street touts in Lagos. One user, #Daddy_Tweens, said the comedian was referring to people in Lagos who “behave like animals,” specifically pointing to suspected thugs in the South-West. Another commenter, #emmakudos, wrote, “Monsters in Lagos like this have been enabled by the government”. A third user, #Abraham06084565, claimed the incident occurred in Bariga after a show, alleging that street boys confronted Brain Jotter after he refused to “settle” them.
Brain Jotter’s ordeal is not an isolated case. It comes just days after Saltiana, popularly known as DJ Salt of Life and the younger sister of Afrobeats star Ayra Starr, alleged that suspected area boys damaged her vehicle after mistaking her for the singer. According to her account, the men called out Ayra Starr’s name and attacked her car when she refused to give them money. In another recent incident, medical doctor Olusina Ajidahun, known as The Bearded Sina, and music video director ThankGod Omori, better known as TG Omori, separately recounted alleged encounters with hoodlums who disrupted their professional activities in Lagos. Ajidahun alleged that touts disrupted a free medical outreach in Mushin and demanded money, threatening to cause chaos if their demands were not met.
The Lagos State Government has acknowledged the growing concern over the activities of street urchins and touts. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, had previously said the government was continuing efforts to arrest and remove street urchins from various parts of the state. However, Wahab warned that cash handouts to hoodlums by celebrities, influencers and members of the public could undermine government efforts by reinforcing the perception that the streets are a lucrative source of livelihood. He urged Lagos residents to cooperate with the government in tackling the activities of street urchins and creating a safer and more orderly environment.
The incident has added to a rising number of complaints about alleged extortion, harassment and vandalism by suspected street touts in parts of Lagos, including Lekki, Ajah, Oshodi, Mushin and Agege. Motorists driving relatively expensive vehicles or those mistaken for celebrities have repeatedly been targeted. Brain Jotter’s latest experience has once again thrown the spotlight on the challenges many face while navigating Lagos traffic.
For Brain Jotter, a man who has built a career making millions laugh, the encounter was a stark reminder that in Lagos, even a lion can be cornered by the hyenas of the street. His cry for help has resonated far beyond his millions of followers, echoing the fears of countless ordinary Nigerians who face similar threats daily. The question now is whether the Lagos State Government will move beyond promises and take decisive action to dismantle the networks of extortion that have turned the city’s roads into a hunting ground for the vulnerable. Until then, the lion may have escaped the zoo, but the jungle of Lagos remains as dangerous as ever.
