A prominent Islamic scholar and former Zamfara State Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Sheikh Tukur Sani Jangebe, has issued a direct and urgent message to Nigeria's leadership, demanding renewed seriousness in tackling the escalating security crisis that has turned vast swathes of the North-West into a theatre of death and displacement. The cleric, who has been a consistent voice against banditry and terrorism, delivered his latest intervention as communities across Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and Kebbi states continue to bleed from relentless attacks by armed groups.
Sheikh Jangebe, who previously served as the Chief Imam of the Muslims Foundation Jumuat Mosque in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, has repeatedly warned that the insecurity situation has become "embarrassing and challenging". In his message to the nation's leaders, the cleric appealed to the Federal Government to treat the security crisis with renewed seriousness. He called on elder statesmen, retired senior security officers and other influential Nigerians to unite and offer strategic counsel to the Federal Government, urging it to firmly protect Nigeria's sovereignty and avoid any reliance on external forces in addressing security challenges.
Sheikh Jangebe has previously attributed the country's security and economic challenges to disobedience to Allah and neglect of the teachings of the Holy Books. He has also expressed dismay over the incessant security challenges in Zamfara State, noting that residents would only find relief through divine intervention. The cleric has stressed that "without peace, progress is unattainable as peace serves as the cornerstone for development in any society".
The cleric's latest intervention comes at a time when communities across the North-West are facing unprecedented levels of violence. On August 2, 2026, suspected bandits attacked Lajinge village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing at least 12 persons, including a father and his two sons who were burnt alive. On August 4, heavily armed bandits invaded Tsamaye community in the same local government area, killing 21 people and abducting 37 others. Just days later, on August 5, bandits attacked five communities in Shagari Local Government Area, rustling livestock and injuring several residents. The attacks have forced thousands of residents to flee their homes, leaving communities across the region largely deserted.
Sheikh Jangebe has also highlighted the link between infrastructure decay and insecurity. In July 2025, he appealed to the Federal Government to urgently rehabilitate the Maru–Mayanchi–Maradun road in Zamfara State, which he said was plagued by over 100 potholes. The cleric warned that the bad road was fuelling bandit attacks and making travel hazardous for residents. He said the onset of the rainy season had worsened the road's condition, creating more potholes and making travel even more hazardous.
The former commissioner has also called for collective effort among Nigerians to end the security challenges affecting the country. He has urged politicians to demonstrate genuine concern for the people who entrusted them with leadership. While expressing optimism that God will bring an end to the crisis, he has called for continuous prayers and more decisive security measures to restore peace and stability in the region.
Sheikh Jangebe's message to Nigeria's leaders is a cry from the heart of a region that has been abandoned to the mercy of bandits. His call for unity, strategic counsel and divine intervention reflects the desperation of communities that have been left to fend for themselves. As the violence continues unabated, the question remains: will the nation's leaders heed the cleric's warning and take decisive action to end the bloodshed, or will they continue to ignore the cries of the suffering?
