The sun had barely risen over the Uko Road area of Sapele, Delta State, on Monday, August 10, 2026, when three-year-old Lemuel collected money from his mother to buy a snack. He was last seen around 11 a.m., a bright-eyed toddler heading out on a simple errand behind Bunex Filling Station. He never came home. By Tuesday morning, the community was in mourning. Lemuel's lifeless body was discovered around 6:30 a.m. in a bush close to his father's compound, his small frame bearing multiple wounds inflicted with a sharp object. The tragic incident has thrown the Sapele community into grief and sparked urgent calls for a thorough investigation into what residents fear may have been a ritual killing.
According to family sources, Lemuel had been playing with other children in the neighbourhood on Monday when he was reportedly sent to buy an item for his father. The boy, who was said to be unwell at the time, did not return home several hours later. His parents, relatives and neighbours immediately launched a search, combing the area as darkness fell. When all efforts failed to locate him, his father formally reported the child missing at the Gana Police Station. The search continued into the night but ended in tragedy the following morning when Lemuel's body was discovered near the family residence. Reports indicate that the child had suffered severe injuries, with his father telling sympathisers that the wounds appeared to have been caused by a sharp object.
The grisly discovery sent shockwaves through the community, particularly following reports that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident. According to unconfirmed reports, investigators recovered bloodstained materials and other suspicious items from a vacant room within the compound where the suspect resided. Items believed to belong to other children were also reportedly found at the scene. Allegations that the child's vital organs may have been removed have emerged, but these claims have not been independently verified and remain part of the ongoing investigation. The family also alleged that blood stains believed to be linked to Lemuel were traced from the scene to the suspect's residence. As of press time, the suspect has been transferred to the Delta State Police Command headquarters in Asaba for further investigation.

In a swift response to the tragedy, the Chairman of Sapele Local Government Council, Hon. Bright Abeke, led a delegation of council officials on a condolence visit to the bereaved family. Represented by the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Raymond Overah, the council chairman expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss and assured the family that the council was committed to ensuring that the matter was thoroughly investigated. Overah disclosed that the council chairman had directed the relevant security agencies to intensify investigations, identify those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable was brought to justice. He also urged residents to remain alert and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies without delay.
The tragic death of the three-year-old has once again highlighted the fragility of life and the importance of collective responsibility in protecting children. For Lemuel's family, who have lost their only son after two daughters, no amount of punishment can erase the pain of losing a child under such heartbreaking circumstances. The community continues to mourn little Lemuel while hoping that the ongoing investigation will provide answers, ensure accountability and prevent a similar tragedy from occurring again.
