The Nigeria Police Force has taken a significant step into the digital age with the launch of the NPF Vigilant App, a citizen-facing mobile platform designed to transform how Nigerians report financial fraud and interact with law enforcement. Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, officially unveiled the application on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at the NPF Conference Centre in Jabi, Abuja, alongside the NPF–MTN Closed User Group (CUG) Network, a dedicated communication platform for police personnel nationwide.

The Vigilant App, developed by the Force ICT Department in collaboration with stakeholders from the financial services sector, allows users to submit suspected fraud reports, upload evidence, track their cases in real time, and receive direct feedback from law enforcement authorities. The platform is designed to bridge the gap between citizens and the police, eliminating the bureaucratic hurdles that have long discouraged many Nigerians from reporting crimes. Citizens can now download the app from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store to report suspected financial fraud directly from their mobile devices.

Speaking at the launch event, IGP Disu described the initiatives as a "practical step in the Force's digital transformation drive". He emphasised that the Vigilant App would "strengthen engagement with the public," while the CUG Network would "improve internal communication," making the Nigeria Police Force "more connected, responsive and effective". The IGP stressed that technology remains an enabler of professional policing and must be deployed "lawfully, ethically and responsibly, with regard for citizens' rights, privacy, data protection and accountability".

The IGP also called for a fundamental shift in Nigeria's approach to policing, warning that the increasing sophistication of criminal activities requires a stronger reliance on intelligence, technology, and real-time information sharing. "The policing environment is changing rapidly. Crime is becoming more sophisticated, information moves faster, and citizens increasingly expect public institutions to be accessible and responsive to technology. The Nigeria Police Force must, therefore, evolve with these realities," Disu stated. He further noted that his administration's vision remains focused on building a police force that is "technology-driven, intelligence-led and people-centred".

The NPF–MTN CUG Network, the second prong of the digital initiative, is a dedicated communication platform designed to provide police personnel nationwide with secure and affordable on-net communication. The platform is expected to enhance emergency coordination, streamline operational response across commands and units, and improve internal communication within the Force. The IGP explained that the platform would enable citizens to report suspicious activities and security incidents more easily, provide useful information to the police, and seek assistance without necessarily having to visit a police station. "Effective policing depends significantly on the quality and timeliness of information available to all of us," he said.

The launch event was attended by high-level representatives from key institutions, including the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Presidential Committee on Economic and Financial Inclusion, the Police Service Commission, the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), financial institutions, fintech companies, MTN Nigeria, Vigilant Technology Limited, and TIMPH International Limited. The Force expressed appreciation to all collaborating partners for their contributions to the successful launch and reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging innovation and strategic partnerships to deliver "more accessible, responsive, people-centred and effective policing services to Nigerians".

Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Information and Communication Technology, Fayoade Adegoke Mustapha, said the initiatives demonstrate the Force's resolve to deploy practical technology-driven solutions that improve service delivery, support personnel, and strengthen public engagement. He urged Nigerians to download the app and use it responsibly to report suspected financial fraud.

The IGP assured Nigerians that information submitted through the application would be handled with confidentiality and protected appropriately. He emphasised that technology could significantly expand the capacity of the police to monitor and respond to threats, stating: "The police cannot be everywhere at the same time, but through technology and partnership with citizens, we can significantly expand our capacity to prevent and respond to crimes".

The launch of the Vigilant App marks a major milestone in the Nigeria Police Force's digital transformation journey. For millions of Nigerians who have endured the frustration of navigating cumbersome reporting processes, the app offers a streamlined, transparent, and accessible alternative. Whether this digital leap will translate into tangible improvements in fraud detection and case resolution remains to be seen, but the direction is clear: the Nigeria Police Force is embracing technology to meet the expectations of a 21st-century citizenry.
