The Carnarvon Regional Court in South Africa's Northern Cape Province has sentenced a 22-year-old man to 20 years of direct imprisonment for the rape of his biological mother, a crime that has shaken the community to its core. The man, whose name has been withheld to protect the identity of the victim, was convicted on Friday, August 28, 2026, after pleading guilty to the charge, which took place at their family home in Carnarvon on November 23, 2025. The court heard that the attack occurred after the 42-year-old mother and her life partner had fallen asleep following an evening of drinking. Her son, who had also been drinking at a friend's house, returned home and found his mother and her partner asleep. He undressed his mother and sexually penetrated her without her consent, according to Mojalefa Senokoatsane, spokesperson for the Northern Cape National Prosecuting Authority.
The victim woke up during the assault and discovered her son on top of her. She screamed and confronted him, at which point he immediately fled the house. She then woke her partner and reported the matter to the police. Following his arrest, the accused initially denied the allegations. However, DNA evidence later linked him to the crime, and faced with the compelling evidence, including his mother's testimony and the DNA results, he eventually pleaded guilty to the charge of rape.
During the sentencing, State prosecutor Xolisa March presented a victim impact statement prepared by the woman, in which she detailed the severe emotional toll the assault has taken on her. The court heard that she had raised her son as a single parent and felt deeply hurt and betrayed by his actions. She continues to receive counselling and suffers ongoing trauma, including difficulty sleeping. In aggravation of sentence, the State argued that the accused had violated his mother's dignity and bodily integrity, as well as the fundamental trust between a parent and child. The prosecution further argued that he had deliberately taken advantage of her vulnerability while she was under the influence of alcohol and unable to adequately protect herself. The court was also told that the accused had recently been released on parole after serving a sentence for a dishonesty-related offence when he committed the rape. The State argued that this showed a serious disregard for the law and for the opportunity he had been given to rehabilitate.
In handing down the sentence, the court considered his guilty plea as a mitigating factor but found that the seriousness of the offence justified a lengthy prison term. The court sentenced him to 20 years of direct imprisonment and ordered that his details be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. The National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the sentence, saying it reflected the seriousness with which sexual offences are treated by the courts and the broader criminal justice system. It also reiterated its commitment to securing justice for victims of sexual violence and holding perpetrators accountable.
The District Commissioner of the Pixley ka Seme District, Major General Nomana Mtukushe, commended Detective Constable Leevirne Nathalie Raaf of the Carnarvon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for her dedication and meticulous investigative work, which contributed to securing the conviction and lengthy sentence. The South African Police Service in the Northern Cape remains committed to implementing its Reset Agenda, which seeks to improve the effectiveness of policing, strengthen the investigation and detection of crime, and ensure that everyone in the province is and feels safe in their homes and communities. The combating of gender-based violence and femicide remains a focused area for the SAPS, and efforts will continue unabated.
