Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued Mrs Adonkie, the wife of a retired Brigadier General, Basil Adonkie, less than 12 hours after she was abducted from her residence in Abuja, in a swift operation that also led to the arrest of two suspected kidnappers. The operation, which began at about 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, saw troops of the Guards Brigade and Army Headquarters Garrison immediately launch a coordinated pursuit after the kidnappers snatched the general's wife from her home. Acting on credible intelligence, the soldiers advanced through the Aco Estate–Goza Community axis and made contact with the criminals.
Overwhelmed by the troops' rapid response and superior firepower, the abductors abandoned Mrs Adonkie and fled into nearby bushes, leading to her successful rescue at Angwan Sabo Village. The troops did not stop there. They intensified their pursuit along the Aco Estate–Angwan Sayawa axis and deployed additional forces to block escape routes. At about 11:09 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, troops of the 176 Guards Battalion and 197 Special Forces Battalion intercepted two fleeing suspects around Gaube Village in Kuje Area Council. During the operation, the soldiers recovered one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine, and 19 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.
The rescued victim has since been reunited with her family, while the two arrested suspects remain in custody for profiling. The army said clearance and tracking operations are still ongoing to apprehend other members of the kidnapping syndicate. It commended residents for their vigilance and cooperation, assuring the public of its commitment to protecting lives and property across the Federal Capital Territory and its environs.
The successful rescue of Mrs Adonkie is a significant victory for the Nigerian Army and a clear message to criminal elements that the days of impunity in the FCT are numbered.
