A viral video that appeared to show police officers running away from a drone has been debunked by the Osun State Police Command, which identified the footage as a scene from a Yoruba movie production rather than an actual operational incident.
The video, which had circulated widely on social media and was reportedly aired by Arise News TV, had been captioned in a manner suggesting that police officers in Osun State were fleeing from a drone. Some reports even claimed that a passerby had used a drone to scare off police officers who were allegedly extorting motorists in Osogbo.
However, in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, by the command's Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the police clarified that the footage was taken from a Yoruba film titled Omije Fun Omije Part 2, which was shot in May 2026. According to the statement, the scene, which occurs at approximately the 39-minute mark of the movie, involved the use of a police patrol vehicle. An actor dressed in police uniform was momentarily left outside the moving van during the scene and ran after it before boarding. The police explained that a bystander who was not part of the film crew recorded the scene out of context and posted it online, falsely labelling it as police officers running from a drone.
The command stressed that the drone visible in the clip was being used by the filmmakers to capture footage for the movie and was not involved in any operational pursuit of police officers. "The Command rejects any narrative that serving officers 'ran away' from a drone. That claim is misleading, damaging to the reputation of the Force, and inconsistent with the facts known to the Command," the statement read.
The police also criticised media outlets and social media users for circulating the footage without proper verification. "Investigative journalism requires verification before a clip is given a national or international frame. Publishing out-of-context footage and attaching a false explanation is not a minor error when it is used to ridicule a security institution," the statement said. The command called on those circulating the material to retract the false caption and narrative and issue a correction clarifying that the footage was from a movie production and not an operational incident.
The Osun State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to lawful and professional policing and warned against what it described as the deliberate distortion of images and videos to drag the command through the mud.
