The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has issued a decisive order compelling the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney-General of the Federation to grant the detained self-styled Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, Adeniyi Adeyemi, access to his lawyers. Justice Obiora Egwuatu gave the order on Thursday, September 3, 2026, while ruling on an ex parte application in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed on Adeyemi's behalf.
The court ordered that for as long as Adeyemi remains in custody, the respondents must permit him unimpeded access to legal practitioners of his own choosing at all reasonable hours. However, Justice Egwuatu declined to grant Adeyemi's other requests for release, bail, and access to medical treatment at this stage, holding that the respondents must first be heard. The judge subsequently gave the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney-General of the Federation a 72-hour ultimatum to show cause why the remaining reliefs sought by Adeyemi should not be granted. The matter was adjourned until September 9, 2026, for the respondents to show cause.
Adeyemi had sought six reliefs in his application, including an order directing his release from custody and granting him bail pending the determination of the suit. He also sought an order allowing him access to medical practitioners of his choice, as well as an injunction restraining the police from interrogating him or obtaining any statement from him without his lawyer being present. His legal team further requested the court to restrain the respondents from interrogating him or requiring him to make, adopt, or sign any statement without a lawyer of his choice being present.
The embattled PFIPC boss was arrested in Osun State in July 2026 after the Federal High Court in Abuja issued a bench warrant for his arrest over his failure to appear for arraignment. He is facing an eight-count charge bordering on alleged forgery, fraud, and impersonation over his claim to be the Director-General of the PFIPC, an organisation the Presidency has disowned as "fake." The prosecution alleged that Adeyemi forged an appointment letter purportedly issued by President Bola Tinubu and signed by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, among other official documents. Adeyemi has denied the allegations and maintained that the council exists.
Justice Mohammed Umar had earlier ordered security agencies to arrest Adeyemi and produce him in court on September 30 for arraignment after he repeatedly failed to appear before the court. The police subsequently arrested him in Osun State and have held him in custody since then. The latest court order represents a significant victory for Adeyemi's legal team, who have been pushing for his right to legal counsel amid the ongoing investigation and prosecution. As the case continues, all eyes will be on the September 9 hearing, when the police and the Attorney-General will have to justify why Adeyemi should not be granted bail and other reliefs.
