The Upper Area Court 2 sitting in Otukpo, Benue State, has ordered the remand of a former councillor, Daniel Ujah, at the Otukpo Correctional Centre over allegations that he assaulted an elderly woman and pushed her into a fire during a confrontation in Ohimini Local Government Area. Ujah, 43, who previously served as councillor representing Awume-Icho Ward, was arraigned by the Nigeria Police on charges including criminal trespass, intimidation, criminal force and assault, causing grievous hurt, and attempted culpable homicide.
The case followed a petition filed by Rebecca Adole at the Area Commander's Office of the Nigeria Police in Otukpo. According to the police, the alleged incident occurred on August 28, 2026, when Ujah reportedly entered the compound of Adole's mother, Amina Iduh, at Akwutulo, Awume village. The former councillor allegedly assaulted the woman and pushed her into a fire, leaving her with injuries to her buttocks while her clothes were burnt. The victim was subsequently taken to a hospital in Onyagede, Ohimini Local Government Area, where she is receiving treatment. The police further alleged that Ujah threatened to kill the woman and claimed that nobody would be able to stop him.
When the matter came up for mention, Ujah pleaded not guilty to all the charges. His lawyer applied for bail, but the prosecution opposed the application. After hearing the submissions, the presiding magistrate, Hasia Garuba, ordered that Ujah remain in custody at the Otukpo Correctional Centre pending further proceedings. The court subsequently adjourned the case until September 22, 2026, for further mention. Ujah's remand is not a conviction, and the allegations against him remain to be determined by the court.
