The Oyo State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, through its Environmental Vanguards, apprehended and secured the conviction of 55 environmental offenders in Ibadan, the state capital, in August 2026. The development underscores the state government's intensified monitoring and enforcement efforts aimed at ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and sustaining a clean, healthy, and habitable environment across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, confirmed the arrests in a statement released on Thursday, September 3, 2026, by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade. Aderinto stated that the offenders were apprehended for violating various environmental laws of the state and were subsequently prosecuted and convicted in accordance with the law. He reaffirmed the state government's commitment to strengthening environmental enforcement and warned residents, business owners, and other stakeholders against activities capable of degrading the environment.
“Environmental laws must be obeyed by all,” Aderinto stressed. He further urged members of the public to support the government's efforts by complying with environmental regulations, adopting proper waste disposal practices, and promptly reporting environmental infractions to the appropriate authorities. Aderinto also reiterated that open dumping and the dumping of refuse on road medians are strictly prohibited in Oyo State. He emphasised that all forms of refuse disposal must be carried out through accredited waste contractors directly from the source, in line with the state government's approved waste management system.
The arrests are part of a broader enforcement drive by the Oyo State Government, which has intensified its fight against environmental degradation. In recent months, the state has introduced a house-to-house waste collection policy, warning residents and business owners that premises without proper waste disposal arrangements risk closure. The government has also launched the “Soro Soke Sita” environmental whistleblower programme, designed to empower residents to report environmental offenders and receive incentives for verified reports.
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has been at the forefront of these efforts, with the Environmental Vanguards conducting routine patrols and enforcement operations across Ibadan metropolis. The apprehension and conviction of the 55 offenders in August demonstrate the government's resolve to enforce environmental laws without compromise. The state has previously arrested and prosecuted offenders for offences ranging from illegal waste disposal to open defecation, with penalties including fines, community service, and imprisonment.
The Oyo State Government has made it clear that it will not tolerate environmental infractions and is determined to create a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents.
