The Bauchi State Police Command has foiled an attempt by suspected cattle rustlers to steal eight cows in Darazo Local Government Area, recovering the animals and a getaway vehicle after a resident's timely tip-off led to a swift police response. The operation occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 3, 2026, at about 2:58 a.m., when operatives from the Darazo Division mobilised to the scene after receiving intelligence that a group of suspected rustlers was loading cows into a Chevrolet saloon car with registration number DAS 452 NE.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, two cows had already been forced into the vehicle while six others were held at the scene awaiting loading. Upon sighting the approaching police team, the suspects abandoned the vehicle and the cattle, fleeing into the darkness. The operatives recovered the Chevrolet saloon car with two cows inside, while the remaining six cows were found tethered nearby. The eight cows were secured as exhibits, and efforts were made to identify their owner. The livestock were subsequently released to their rightful owner on bond.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commended the resident whose vigilance and prompt action led to the recovery of the cattle. The commissioner urged members of the public to promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies and reiterated the command's commitment to protecting lives, property, and livestock across the state. A manhunt has been launched for the fleeing suspects, and investigations are ongoing.
