Ghana has taken a major step toward transparency in marriage administration with the launch of Marrify, a new digital platform that allows members of the public to verify marriage and divorce records. The app, launched in Accra on August 28, 2026, by Marry Right Ghana Limited in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, is designed to help prospective couples confirm their partner's marital status before committing to marriage.
Marrify operates as a searchable marriage and divorce registry covering ordinance, customary, and Islamic marriages. Users can search for records using details such as names, spouse names, towns, churches, denominations, certificate numbers, and Gazette numbers. The platform also provides a register of licensed marriage officers, venues, and Imams, helping couples verify that the individuals and institutions officiating their marriage are properly authorised. Its records are drawn from multiple official sources, including the Registrar-General's Department, courts, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, and the Ghana Gazette. The database includes Gazette records dating as far back as 1886.
At the launch, Gender Minister Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey encouraged prospective couples to independently verify information about their partners, marriage venues, and officiants. She said, "You would not have to take a person's word for it, even in the most trusted relationship. You can verify with this app". The initiative is aimed at preventing situations where unsuspecting individuals discover after marriage that their spouse was already married or had concealed important details about their marital history.
Marrify also contains divorce records based on court rulings and judgments, with some records linked to the marriages to which they relate. However, the platform cautions that records are still being uploaded, and a search returning no result should not automatically be interpreted as proof that a person has never been married. The app also allows individuals and institutions to submit marriage and divorce records, together with supporting documents, for verification.
Beyond public searches, Marrify features separate portals for MMDAs, churches, the Registrar-General's Department, and courts to submit or manage records. It also includes a Family Law AI assistant for research and document review. The Ministry has urged Marry Right Ghana to work with government institutions, religious bodies, and traditional authorities to ensure the platform's information remains accurate and regularly updated.
