The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has issued an urgent appeal to the public for assistance in locating the family of a six-year-old boy who was found wandering alone and crying near the NNPC Towers in Abuja's Central Business District on Friday afternoon. The child, identified as Haneem Hussaini Bello, became separated from his mother and siblings after Juma'at prayers at the Central Mosque and has been unable to provide sufficient information to lead officers to his family.
According to a statement released by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the boy was discovered at approximately 3 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026, by concerned members of the public who found him wandering around the NNPC Towers in distress. The child was immediately taken into protective custody by the police, who have since been working to trace his parents or relatives. At the time he was found, Haneem was wearing carton-coloured trousers and a brown shirt with black and white stripes on the left side.
Preliminary investigations and interviews with the young boy have revealed that he travelled to Abuja from Bauchi State with his mother and siblings for the summer break. The family had reportedly gone to the Central Mosque for Juma'at prayers when the boy suddenly became separated from his mother and siblings and was unable to find his way back to them. He was subsequently discovered wandering around the NNPC Towers while crying and was taken into protective custody by the police.
The FCT Police Command has intensified efforts to locate the child's family, but has so far been unable to make contact with his parents or relatives. SP Josephine Adeh appealed to members of the public with useful information that could assist the police in identifying or locating the child's parents or relatives to come forward. She urged anyone with relevant information to report to the nearest police station or contact the FCT Police Command spokesperson on 07038979348.
The incident has raised concerns about child safety and the vulnerability of children in crowded public spaces, particularly during large religious gatherings. The police have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe reunion of the six-year-old boy with his family.
