Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have delivered a decisive blow to the economic sabotage that fuels banditry in the North-West, foiling a massive cattle rustling operation and recovering over 500 cattle in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The operation, conducted on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, was a direct response to a distress call from residents of Rugar Mande Kurmin, who raised the alarm over the movement of suspected terrorists through their community.
Acting on the intelligence, troops of Sector 1 immediately mobilised to the suspected withdrawal routes of the criminals, establishing blocking positions to intercept the rustlers and prevent them from escaping with the animals. The strategic deployment forced a confrontation, with troops engaging the suspected terrorists from multiple positions. The coordinated assault proved overwhelming, causing the criminals to withdraw in disarray and abandon their loot. The soldiers subsequently swept the area, recovering over 500 rustled cattle. The livestock, representing the life savings of numerous pastoralist families, were later identified and handed over to their respective owners.
This successful operation is the latest demonstration of Operation FANSAN YAMMA's sustained efforts to protect lives and property while disrupting criminal activities and denying terrorists and bandits freedom of action across the Joint Operations Area. The military has intensified patrols and offensive operations across vulnerable communities and routes in Kaduna and other parts of the North-West, aiming to dismantle the economic networks that sustain terrorist groups. In a statement following the operation, the military command reiterated its call for public cooperation, urging residents to sustain their support for security agencies by providing timely and credible information on suspicious movements and criminal activities. As one military source noted, such collaboration remains critical to tracking criminal elements, preventing attacks, and restoring lasting peace across the Joint Operations Area.
