Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in 2027, arguing that the administration’s economic reforms are beginning to yield positive results despite continued hardship across the country.
Udeh made the remarks during an interview on Arise News Prime Time, where he discussed the President’s re-election bid and arguments over which region should produce Nigeria’s next president.
The minister said Tinubu remained eligible for another term and argued that the reforms introduced by his administration had placed Nigeria on a path towards economic recovery.
According to Udeh, Nigeria’s economic growth has improved from approximately two per cent in 2023 to about four per cent, while increased revenue allocations to states and local governments have created opportunities for development projects.
He argued that the additional resources available to subnational governments could help them improve infrastructure and deliver services to residents.
However, Udeh acknowledged that inflation and economic hardship remained major challenges for Nigerians. He maintained that the reforms had not yet delivered their full intended benefits but insisted that the country was moving towards recovery.
“We know that there’s inflation. We know that there’s still hardship. But we also know that Nigeria has been put on track for development, to come out from economic hardship,” he said.
The minister also pointed to infrastructure and transportation projects in Enugu State as examples of development opportunities available to state governments.
Addressing the debate over regional power rotation, Udeh acknowledged that he would like to see the South-East produce a president at some point. He nevertheless argued that presidential elections ultimately depend on candidates securing votes from Nigerians across the country.
Udeh, who is from the South-East, is also a member of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council.
His comments come as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, with Tinubu seeking another four-year term.
While the administration has defended its reforms as necessary to stabilise the economy, critics continue to question whether reported improvements in economic indicators have translated into better living conditions for ordinary Nigerians.
