Operatives of the Edo State Police Command, working with other security agencies, have killed three suspected kidnappers and rescued an abducted man during a joint operation in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the state.

The operation took place at about 2 a.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2026, in the Geo Works bushes and forest bordering Otuo, around Igarra, following intelligence about the location of the victim.

The rescued man was identified by the police as Michael Akano, who was reportedly abducted on October 9.

In a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the operation involved police officers from Igarra Division, personnel of the Nigerian Army’s 195 Battalion, Department of State Services operatives, local hunters and members of the Edo State Security Corps.

The police said the joint team encountered members of the suspected kidnapping gang during the operation, resulting in a gun battle in which three suspects were killed. Other members of the gang reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds.

Akano was rescued unhurt and taken to a hospital for medical attention.

Items recovered from the scene included three locally fabricated single-barrel shotguns, eight live cartridges, five expended cartridges, two cutlasses and five mobile phones.

The bodies of the three deceased suspects were deposited at the General Hospital mortuary in Igarra for autopsy, according to the police.

The command said a bush-combing operation was ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.

The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Patrick Daaor, commended the joint security team for its response and cooperation. He also urged residents to provide credible and timely information that could assist security agencies in tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes.

The incident comes amid continuing security operations across Edo State to combat kidnapping and improve the safety of residents and travellers.

The identities of the three deceased suspects and the fleeing members of the gang have not been publicly disclosed in the reports reviewed.
