The President of the Arewa Youths, Yerima Shettima, has warned social media activist VeryDarkMan against staging protests against President Bola Tinubu’s administration in Abuja or any part of Northern Nigeria.
Shettima made the remarks in a video circulated online in June 2026, amid VeryDarkMan’s protest against the Tinubu administration and its handling of insecurity and other national concerns.
In the video, Shettima accused the activist of disrespecting Northerners and urged him to relocate his protest to Edo State, where the activist is from.
“There is no way you will protest in Abuja. You want to cause problems in the North, whereby our security agencies have started yielding fruitful achievements,” Shettima said, according to a report by Legit.ng published on June 11, 2026.
He further warned the activist against organising demonstrations in any northern state, insisting that such protests could create tension in the region.
Shettima also declared that northern youths were prepared to defend their region, arguing that protests should not undermine what he described as security gains recorded by security agencies.
The remarks drew mixed reactions online, with some social media users supporting his call for peace while others criticised the attempt to restrict protests to particular regions.
However, the exact quotation in the circulating claim — that every Northerner supports Tinubu and that no protest would be held in the North without Shettima’s permission — could not be independently verified from the reports reviewed.
In a November 2024 interview with Punch, Shettima had said the North had not reached a collective decision on whether to support Tinubu’s second-term bid, adding that Nigerians dissatisfied with the administration had the right to express their grievances.
His June 2026 remarks therefore reflect his opposition to the particular protest, but do not establish that all Northerners support Tinubu or share his position on demonstrations.
