A community hunters’ leader in Andamin, Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, Shuayibu Danladi Ciroma, has been killed following a gun battle with suspected bandits while attempting to prevent a possible attack on the community.
Ciroma, who was also a member of the Forest Guard Corps, reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during the confrontation and later died from blood loss.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, by community leader Tanko Bobbo Andamin, the incident occurred on Monday evening after security personnel and local hunters received intelligence about a planned attack on Andamin.
The statement said a joint team of military personnel and hunters moved towards the area to prevent the suspected attack but encountered the armed men along the way, triggering an exchange of gunfire.
Ciroma was reportedly wounded during the confrontation. However, he was not immediately accounted for when members of the team returned to their base after the encounter.
A search team subsequently returned to the scene early the following morning and discovered his body.
Andamin expressed condolences to Ciroma’s family, the community and fellow hunters, describing the deceased as someone who died defending his people and their land.
He also called on the Taraba State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to tackle the activities of armed groups in the area.
The community leader warned that worsening insecurity had disrupted residents’ livelihoods, with many reportedly afraid to travel to their farms, visit markets in neighbouring communities or conduct their daily businesses.
He said the situation had increased economic hardship and called for coordinated intelligence gathering and security operations to protect vulnerable communities and restore public confidence.
When contacted for confirmation, Taraba State Police Command spokesperson ASP Victor Mshelizah reportedly said poor network connectivity had prevented him from reaching the Divisional Police Officer for further details. He promised to provide an update after establishing contact.
As of the latest reports, there was no confirmed information on arrests or the identities of the suspected attackers.
