In a major success for police officers and local communities across northwestern Nigeria, the Kebbi State Police Command has successfully secured the conviction and sentencing of nineteen individuals involved in terrorism, illegal possession of firearms, and the deliberate destruction of public property. The judicial rulings, delivered at the Federal High Court in Birnin Kebbi by Justice Emmanuel Gakko, mark the successful end of a detailed investigation and prosecution campaign aimed at removing criminal networks from the region. The convicted men received prison sentences ranging between three and eight years, sending a clear message that law enforcement will hold offenders accountable for serious crimes against the state.
The targeted police operations focused on known security hotspots in the state, including the Yauri, Bagudo, and Sakaba Local Government Areas, where criminal groups had been trying to establish bases. Court records showed that key individuals, including Aliyu Hadari and Umar Musa Uzzi, were found guilty of multiple charges related to terrorism, providing food and equipment to armed groups, and violating national security laws. In addition, several of the defendants were convicted for damaging public electricity infrastructure, an action that cut off power supplies to several rural communities and caused hardship for local businesses and families.
Evidence presented during the trials showed how these individuals operated a network to supply armed groups with tools, money, and weapons. Prosecutors demonstrated that the suspects actively supported violent groups operating along the borders of the state, making it possible for them to carry out attacks against peaceful farming communities. By presenting clear facts and physical evidence in court, the prosecution team successfully broke down the local support system that enabled these illegal activities to continue.
The Commissioner of Police for Kebbi State, Umar M. Hadejia, praised the judge, police officers, and legal team for their hard work throughout the process. Speaking after the court sessions, the police chief stated that these convictions show the determination of law enforcement agencies to protect citizens and preserve public safety. He emphasized that the police force will continue to pursue those involved in illegal weapons trade and the destruction of public property, ensuring that suspects are brought before the court to face trial under the law.
To maintain peace across the state, police leaders have urged community elders, traditional leaders, and residents to continue working with security agencies by sharing useful information. Police officials promised that any information given by the public will be handled with strict confidence to protect informants. As Kebbi State continues its efforts to build lasting security and economic stability, these court decisions represent a positive step forward in restoring public confidence and keeping local communities safe.
