Obi’s Overseas Engagement Forces NDC to Postpone 2027 Campaign Council Inauguration to October 26

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has postponed the unveiling and inauguration of its National Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing an important overseas engagement involving its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The party announced the postponement on Monday, October 19, 2026, through a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director. The inauguration, originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, will now take place on Monday, October 26.

According to the NDC, the adjustment became necessary because Obi's international engagement conflicted with the original date, making it necessary to reschedule the formal inauguration of the body expected to coordinate the party's election campaign.

The party explained that the change was occasioned by the tight schedule of its presidential candidate, who had an important engagement outside Nigeria.

In announcing the revised date, the NDC leadership apologised to party members, supporters and other stakeholders who might have made arrangements to attend the event.

It also urged supporters to remain committed to the party's preparations for the 2027 presidential and general elections, stressing that the postponement should not distract from its political objectives.

The development comes days after the party's National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, announced plans to inaugurate the campaign council during a meeting of the National Executive Committee scheduled for October 20.

At the time, Cleopas said the proposed meeting would provide an opportunity for the party leadership to ratify important decisions concerning the forthcoming elections, formally unveil its campaign structure and strengthen coordination among candidates.

He also disclosed that the party intended to present Certificates of Return to its candidates and organise a dinner aimed at promoting cooperation among those contesting elections on the NDC platform.

However, the party's latest statement specifically announced the postponement of the campaign council's unveiling and inauguration. It did not clearly establish whether every other activity previously associated with the October 20 meeting had also been rescheduled.

The campaign council is expected to play a central role in organising political activities, coordinating mobilisation and managing the party's presidential election strategy.

Obi is contesting the 2027 presidential election on the NDC platform alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is the party's vice-presidential candidate.

The party had previously disclosed that consultations were underway with both candidates over appointments to the campaign structure, including the positions of director-general, campaign spokesperson and other principal officials.

According to earlier statements by the NDC leadership, the party developed an organisational framework for the council in August and subsequently sought input from Obi, Kwankwaso and other stakeholders before finalising its composition.

The leadership maintained that the consultation process was necessary to ensure that individuals appointed to strategic campaign positions possessed the commitment required to discharge their responsibilities.

The October 26 date represents another adjustment to the council's inauguration timetable. The NDC had initially indicated that the structure could be inaugurated in September before subsequently fixing October 20.

The party has faced questions about the pace of its preparations, particularly following disagreements surrounding a separate campaign structure announced by an independent support group associated with the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket.

The NDC previously distanced itself from that arrangement, maintaining that the responsibility for establishing its official presidential campaign council rested with the party leadership.

Against that background, the forthcoming inauguration is expected to formally identify the officials responsible for coordinating the party's campaign activities.

Although the postponement has been attributed to Obi's overseas engagement, the NDC has not publicly provided details of the engagement's location, duration or purpose in its latest announcement.

With the inauguration now scheduled for October 26, attention will turn to whether the party unveils the full membership of its campaign council and clarifies the responsibilities of its principal officers as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
