The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to apprehending those responsible for the killing of prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka and his associate in Katsina State, as a senior military commander visited the bereaved family and announced strengthened security operations in the affected area.
Major General Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed Wase, General Officer Commanding 1 Division Nigerian Army and Commander of Sector 1, Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, visited Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. The visit followed the fatal shooting of Sheikh Masussuka and his associate, Adamu Abubakar, by unidentified gunmen outside the cleric's residence the previous evening.
During the condolence visit, Wase met members of the deceased scholar's family, students, associates and other mourners. He conveyed the sympathies of the Nigerian Army leadership and assured them that security agencies were working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
The military commander also presented a condolence donation of ₦500,000 on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff to support the bereaved family. He urged residents, particularly the scholar's students and followers, to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies conducting investigations.
According to information released about the visit, Wase confirmed that troops of the Nigerian Army's 17 Brigade had been deployed in the area and were collaborating with other security agencies to maintain security, pursue the attackers and prevent further violence.
The killings occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Monday, October 26, when two armed men riding a motorcycle approached the cleric and his associate outside his residence in Dutsin-Ma and opened fire.
The Katsina State Police Command confirmed that both men sustained serious gunshot wounds. Following a distress report, the Divisional Police Officer in Dutsin-Ma mobilised personnel to the scene, and the victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel pronounced them dead.
Police Commissioner Ali Umar Fage subsequently ordered the deployment of tactical and operational teams to intensify the search for the fleeing gunmen. The command also announced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack and appealed for information from members of the public.
The police have not established a motive for the killings or publicly identified the suspects. No confirmed arrest had been announced in the available official accounts, and authorities have not attributed the attack to any particular armed organisation.
The deaths have attracted widespread condemnation because of Sheikh Masussuka's standing within the religious community. The scholar was known for his Islamic teachings and advocacy of peaceful coexistence, according to tributes issued following his death.
Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda condemned the attack and described the cleric as a respected advocate of religious tolerance, mutual understanding and peaceful relations among communities.
In a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Mohammed, the governor expressed shock over the killings and extended condolences to the families, students, religious followers and other people affected by the tragedy.
"Those behind this heinous act must be brought to justice," Radda said, calling on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible face the law.
The governor also appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid actions capable of heightening tensions. He urged the public to cooperate with investigators and provide credible information that could assist efforts to identify the attackers.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has similarly directed the police and other security agencies to intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the killings. The presidential directive has been followed by reports of an intensified military search involving troops of the 17 Brigade.
During his visit to Dutsin-Ma, Major General Wase also addressed broader security concerns affecting communities within the area. These included issues raised by the Chairman of the House Committee on Army, identified in the military account as Hon. Kurfi.
The commander confirmed the existence of a Forward Operating Base at Kurfi, explaining that the military facility operates alongside the Civilian Guard Support System. He directed the relevant commander to intensify patrols across the surrounding communities to strengthen security and reassure residents.
The military said Dutsin-Ma remained peaceful following the visit, with security personnel maintaining operations in the area. However, that assessment does not establish that the suspects have been apprehended or that the investigation into the killings has been completed.
The deployment forms part of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the joint military campaign targeting armed groups responsible for attacks, kidnappings and other violent crimes across northwestern Nigeria.
Katsina State has experienced persistent insecurity involving armed groups operating in rural communities and along transportation routes. Security forces have conducted repeated operations to rescue abducted residents, confront suspected terrorists and improve protection for vulnerable settlements.
The killing of a prominent religious leader presents particular concerns because such incidents can affect public confidence and generate anxiety among followers and residents. Authorities have therefore emphasised both the pursuit of the attackers and the importance of preventing retaliatory actions or further disturbances.
Although security agencies have promised accountability, the available information does not establish whether investigators have recovered weapons, obtained identifying evidence or determined the circumstances that motivated the attack.
The involvement of the police, military and other security agencies also makes coordination important. Investigators must establish the identities of the attackers, preserve relevant evidence and ensure that any eventual prosecution is supported by reliable findings.
For the families of Sheikh Masussuka and Adamu Abubakar, the condolence visit and financial assistance represent official recognition of their loss. However, the central demand remains the identification and lawful prosecution of those responsible for the fatal shooting.
The Nigerian Army has pledged to maintain security operations around Dutsin-Ma and neighbouring communities, while the police continue their investigation. Further official updates will be necessary to determine whether the intensified search produces arrests and establishes the motive behind the killings.
