Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has stressed that women’s economic empowerment is central to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country.
Mrs. Tinubu made the point in Akure on Saturday while distributing working equipment—including deep freezers, gas cookers, and grinding machines—to 500 women drawn from all 18 Local Government Areas of Ondo State.
Represented by Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, wife of the Ondo State Governor, the First Lady said the programme was designed to lift women into economic stability by providing tools that could either help them start fresh businesses or expand existing ones.
Highlighting women’s role in building families and strengthening communities, Mrs. Tinubu urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the items.
“Don’t sell these tools. We will do a follow up on how they are being used. Let these items serve as a foundation for creating wealth for yourselves and your families,” she advised.
The initiative, she explained, was in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), which promotes inclusive growth and sustainable development, especially for women. She commended the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, led by Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, for making the programme possible.
The state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Seun Osamaye, also applauded the First Lady, noting that Ondo women have consistently benefitted from different phases of the RHI. According to her, the new empowerment will reduce poverty, discourage begging, and help women assert their independence.
Earlier, Orelope-Adefulire described the project as a deliberate effort to ensure women contribute meaningfully to nation-building. She promised that more empowerment programmes would reach Ondo women, provided beneficiaries demonstrate that the tools were being put to productive use.
With growing calls for inclusive economic growth, Mrs. Tinubu’s intervention in Ondo underscores her belief that women’s empowerment is not just about charity, but a strategic step towards meeting Nigeria’s SDG targets and building a stronger society.
