The Jigawa State House of Assembly has suspended the Speaker of the Auyo Legislative Council, Hon. Haruna Maigari, over allegations of anti-party conduct that officials say threaten the unity and electoral prospects of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the grassroots level. The decision was taken during plenary on Tuesday, 2 June 2026, at the Assembly complex in Dutse, the state capital. It came after the Majority Leader, Hon. Lawan Dansure, moved a motion calling for disciplinary action against the councillor for conduct deemed harmful to party cohesion.

Dansure told the House that the actions of the Speaker of the Auyo Legislative Council were “detrimental to the unity, stability, and progress of the All Progressives Congress in the state”, and warned that anti‑party conduct at the grassroots could undermine the APC’s performance in future elections. Following the adoption of the motion, the Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Haruna Dangyatin, announced Maigari’s suspension with immediate effect. “Hon. Haruna Maigari is hereby suspended as Speaker of Auyo Legislative Council over alleged anti‑party activities,” Dangyatin declared. He added that an investigative committee had been constituted to examine the matter and report back within two weeks. The committee is expected to establish the facts and recommend further action. Dangyatin also directed the suspended official to immediately hand over all official documents and responsibilities to the Deputy Speaker of the Auyo Legislative Council to ensure continuity of legislative business.

Maigari, who also serves as the councillor representing Auyo Ward, has been affected by a wave of suspensions across Jigawa APC following the party’s recently concluded primary elections. Several special advisers and special assistants have already been suspended from state level down to local government level over similar allegations. In a related development earlier in the week, the Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, had approved the indefinite suspension of three special advisers and two supervisory councillors in Auyo Local Government Area, citing the need to monitor developments ahead of the 2027 polls. Those suspensions were part of the same political realignment that has now reached the legislative council.

The APC in Jigawa State has been vigorously enforcing internal discipline in the aftermath of the primaries, which produced candidates for governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly positions. Party leaders have made it clear that any conduct capable of weakening the party or giving an advantage to opposition forces would not be tolerated. The suspension of a legislative council speaker is the most significant disciplinary action taken at the local government level since the primaries concluded.

As of the time of this report, Maigari had not publicly responded to the allegations. He remains suspended pending the outcome of the investigative committee’s report.
