In a move aimed at enhancing sports development and supporting athletes in Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori presented a Toyota Coaster bus and a Hiace bus each to Warri Wolves and Delta Queens football clubs. The handover ceremony, held at the Government House in Asaba over the weekend, was designed to motivate players, facilitate their travel logistics, and strengthen Delta State’s enduring leadership in Nigerian sports.

Speaking during the presentation, Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the donation was part of his administration’s commitment to supporting athletes and ensuring their welfare. He stated that the vehicles would significantly ease the teams’ movement for training sessions and away matches, while also improving operational efficiency. “Our athletes are ambassadors of Delta State. Supporting them with resources that enhance their comfort, safety, and performance is a top priority for this administration,” the Governor said.

The Governor highlighted that sports development extends beyond the field, stressing the importance of infrastructure, logistics, and institutional support. “We want our teams to excel not just in competitions but also in professionalism and discipline. By providing these vehicles, we are creating an enabling environment for players to focus on improving their skills and achieving excellence,” he added.

Team officials and players expressed heartfelt appreciation for the gesture. Coach of Warri Wolves, Mr. Emmanuel Okafor, described the donation as “a game-changer for the team,” noting that reliable transport would help reduce fatigue, improve punctuality for matches, and foster better team coordination. Delta Queens captain, Miss Ifeoma Okwu, echoed the sentiment, stating that the vehicles would boost morale and enable players to perform optimally in upcoming competitions.

Officials from the Delta State Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Social Development emphasized that the donation is part of a broader initiative to strengthen the state’s sports ecosystem. Stakeholders highlighted that strategic investments in logistics and infrastructure are critical to nurturing talent, sustaining competitiveness, and positioning Delta State as a model for sports administration in Nigeria.

The ceremony attracted government officials, club representatives, and members of the media, all of whom praised the Governor’s proactive approach to sports development. Observers noted that the initiative would not only enhance the operational capacity of the football clubs but also encourage youth participation in sports, fostering a culture of excellence and discipline.

Through this strategic intervention, Governor Oborevwori’s administration continues to demonstrate a steadfast commitment to nurturing athletes, improving welfare, and ensuring that Delta State remains a beacon of sports excellence in Nigeria.
