Edo State emerged as the third-best performing team at the 9th National Youth Games held in Asaba, Delta State, returning with a total of 33 gold, 18 silver, and 28 bronze medals. The team’s performance was formally recognized at Government House, Benin City, where Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo received the athletes alongside his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa.

Governor Okpebholo commended the athletes’ efforts and highlighted the need for continued focus and discipline in future competitions. He announced a cash reward of ₦10 million in recognition of their achievement and encouraged the team to aim for first place in subsequent editions of the Games.

“I congratulate our athletes for securing third position. Edo deserves first place, and with commitment and discipline, we will get there,” the Governor said.

The National Youth Games, which bring together athletes from across Nigeria, have historically served as a platform for talent identification and development. Edo State’s third-place finish marks an improvement compared to previous years, reflecting a combination of preparation, training, and government support.

Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Mr. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, stated that the administration’s investment in sports infrastructure and athlete welfare has been central to the improved performance. Enabulele presented the second runner-up trophy to the Governor and noted that consistent government support could help Edo athletes achieve higher rankings in future competitions.

The 9th National Youth Games featured participation from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with Team Edo emerging as one of the top-performing contingents. Analysts note that while Edo’s medal haul demonstrates growth, sustaining this level of performance will require ongoing investment in coaching, facilities, and grassroots development.

The State Government’s recognition of the athletes aligns with broader national efforts to encourage youth participation in sports and identify potential talent for future international competitions. The cash reward and public acknowledgment are expected to reinforce the athletes’ commitment to training and competition.
