Tension erupted on Saturday during a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) encounter between Katsina United and Barau Football Club, following a violent incident in which a Barau FC player, Nana Abraham, was allegedly attacked by enraged fans who invaded the pitch.
Eyewitnesses said the situation turned chaotic after a controversial referee decision late in the second half, sparking outrage among home supporters. In the ensuing melee, some fans reportedly stormed the field and assaulted players and officials.
During the attack, Nana Abraham sustained a deep cut on his neck, believed to have been caused by a sharp object. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Reports indicate that he is currently in critical but stable condition.
Security operatives later restored order and escorted both teams out of the stadium to prevent further escalation. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and NPFL management have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
Football observers have condemned the act, describing it as a dangerous reminder of the growing menace of fan violence in Nigerian football. Many have called for swift investigation and sanctions against those responsible to safeguard the integrity of the sport.
