Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — Team Nigeria has continued its remarkable run of success at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games, delivering world-class performances across multiple sporting disciplines and solidifying its position as one of the leading nations in the ongoing tournament.
In the women’s 59kg weightlifting category, Rafiatu Folashade Lawal emerged as a dominant force, clinching three gold medals in a clean sweep that showcased her exceptional strength and consistency. Her achievement reaffirmed her reputation as one of Africa’s most formidable athletes on the global stage.
Adding to Nigeria’s growing medal haul, Edidiong Joseph Umoafia put up an impressive performance in the men’s weightlifting category, securing one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal. His display of grit and precision added another layer of pride to Team Nigeria’s campaign in Riyadh.
In boxing, Zainab Adeshina advanced to the final of the women’s 51kg division after a composed and tactical victory over her Algerian opponent in the semifinals. Her progress has further raised hopes for another gold medal for Nigeria in the competition.
The momentum is expected to continue on Day 4, as Ruth Imoleayo and Yusuf Islamiyat prepare to compete in the women’s 63kg and 69kg weightlifting finals, respectively. Zainab Adeshina will also enter the ring once again, this time to fight for gold in the 53kg women’s boxing final.
Officials say Team Nigeria’s strong performance is a direct reflection of the RHINSE strategic framework, which emphasizes athlete development, international exposure, and institutional reform in sports governance.
The National Sports Commission reaffirmed its commitment to “strengthening structures, elevating athlete preparation pathways, and ensuring sustained international competitiveness.”
With multiple medals already secured and several finals yet to be contested, Nigeria is on track to surpass its previous performances at the Islamic Solidarity Games, cementing its status as a continental sporting powerhouse.
