Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has commissioned three oxygen production plants across the state’s senatorial districts in a move aimed at strengthening emergency healthcare delivery.

The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, performed the inauguration on Saturday, commending the state’s Commissioner for Health, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, for his commitment to improving the health sector.

The Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) plants, located in Sagbama (Bayelsa West), Brass (Bayelsa East), and Yenagoa (Bayelsa Central), were established through collaboration between the Bayelsa State Government, the Federal Ministry of Health, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), and the Global Fund.

Prof. Brisibe described the project as a “major milestone” in addressing the longstanding gap in oxygen supply in the state.
“For many years, the absence of an oxygen plant in Bayelsa left doctors and nurses helpless as patients in need struggled for breath,” he said. “Oxygen is life. It is invisible, yet indispensable.”

He noted that the plants would enhance the state’s response to health emergencies such as pneumonia in children, maternal complications, asthma, road traffic accidents, and outbreaks of diseases.

The event was attended by senior government officials including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Wisdom Ebiye Sawyer, mni; the Commissioner for Bayelsa West, Mr. Michael Magbisa; WHO State Coordinator, Dr. Marcus Oluwadare; traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.
