A brutal attack unfolded in the farming community of Unguwar Kwanan Guga, located within the Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State, on the night of Sunday, May 17, 2026. The assault, which began around 11:00 p.m., occurred shortly after a heavy rainfall had passed through the area. Taking advantage of the wet conditions that had driven most residents indoors, a gang of armed bandits stormed the village, killing one person and shooting another, while a number of others were abducted and taken to an unknown location.

Residents of Unguwar Kwanan Guga told reporters that the village had just settled down after a brief period of rain when the attackers struck. Many families had stepped outside after the downpour to fetch water from communal sources, a nightly ritual that exposed them to the gunmen. The bandits opened fire indiscriminately as they moved through the settlement. One resident was killed on the spot, while another sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby health facility for treatment. The attackers then went from house to house, selecting their targets before herding them into the surrounding darkness.

The identities of the deceased and the injured have not yet been made public. The exact number of persons abducted remains unclear, as community leaders are still trying to account for all residents. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the Katsina State Police Command had not issued an official statement at the time of this report.

The assault on Unguwar Kwanan Guga is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have plagued Katsina State, particularly along its southern corridor. The community lies in a region that has repeatedly suffered from bandit attacks, abductions, and cattle rustling. In late April 2026, armed bandits carried out a midnight raid in Mailaya community, also within Funtua LGA, killing one resident and robbing a PDP House of Assembly aspirant. Earlier in the same month, coordinated attacks on communities in the neighbouring Bakori LGA left multiple people dead and several homes burned.

Residents of Unguwar Kwanan Guga have expressed deep frustration over the inability of security forces to prevent such attacks. Many noted that the gunmen operated for a significant period without any intervention, leaving the community to fend for itself. The attack occurred less than a week after a separate incident in which bandits killed two persons and abducted several others in a community within the same Funtua axis.

As of Monday morning, the Katsina State Police Command had not released any statement regarding the attack, and no arrests had been announced. The injured victim was said to be receiving medical care at an undisclosed hospital, while the families of the abducted residents waited anxiously for any news of their loved ones. The body of the deceased was prepared for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

The repeated attacks on communities in and around Funtua have raised urgent questions about the effectiveness of current security arrangements in the state. Residents have called for the deployment of additional military personnel, the establishment of permanent security posts in vulnerable villages, and improved intelligence gathering to preempt future raids. The communities along the Katsina-Kaduna border, where Unguwar Kwanan Guga is situated, have long been identified as a corridor for bandit infiltration, but the frequency of attacks has only increased.

For the people of Unguwar Kwanan Guga, the night of May 17 will be remembered as a night when rain was followed not by relief, but by gunfire. A father is dead. Another resident is nursing a bullet wound. Several families are missing mothers, daughters, and sons. And as the sun rose over the village on Monday morning, the only sound was the wailing of women and the unanswered question: when will the government protect us?
