In a swift and decisive response, security forces intercepted a group of bandits who had stormed Yartafki village in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State, neutralizing one suspect and recovering all the cattle stolen during the night raid. The operation, which took place in the early hours of Monday, May 18, 2026, came shortly after the armed gang had invaded the rural community, rustling a significant number of cattle and causing panic among residents. A police source confirmed that security operatives acted on actionable intelligence, tracking the fleeing criminals and engaging them in a brief but intense confrontation. One of the bandits was neutralized, while the others fled into nearby bushes with various degrees of injuries. All the stolen cattle were recovered intact and are currently in police custody awaiting identification and release to their rightful owners.
The Katsina State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement on the operation, but a source familiar with the incident told Stone Reporters News that the success was the result of improved intelligence gathering and rapid response coordination between the police and local vigilantes. The source added that the Command is intensifying efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent reprisal attacks. The successful recovery of the cattle was met with relief by residents of Yartafki and adjoining communities, who have repeatedly complained about the rising tide of banditry and cattle rustling in the Funtua axis.
The Funtua area has witnessed a surge in bandit attacks in recent years, with criminal gangs frequently targeting farming communities, rustling livestock, and kidnapping residents for ransom. In April 2022, bandits invaded Yartafki village along the Funtua‑Zaria Road and abducted the principal of Government Junior Secondary School Makera, Malam Bala Magaji. In January 2026, suspected bandits attacked Chibauna community in Funtua LGA, killing two persons and abducting more than 50 women. The latest incident has further heightened security concerns, but the police’s swift intervention has offered a glimmer of hope to local residents.
Residents have appealed to the government to deploy more security personnel to the area, establish permanent military posts, and equip local vigilantes to enable them to respond more effectively to future attacks. They also expressed gratitude to the police for their bravery and professionalism, urging them to sustain the momentum. While the recovery of the cattle and the elimination of one suspect are significant achievements, the larger challenge remains the dismantling of the criminal networks that have turned rural communities into hunting grounds. The police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that all necessary measures will be taken to restore lasting peace to Funtua and its environs.
