NAF Recovers More Aircraft Wreckage in Ondo as Navy Divers Intensify Search for Evidence of Fatal Crash

The Nigerian Air Force has announced the recovery of additional components from its ATR 42-500 aircraft that crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, as military personnel and aviation investigators continue efforts to retrieve wreckage from underwater locations. The latest recovery forms part of a coordinated operation involving specialist divers, technical survey teams and accident investigators working to secure materials that could help establish the circumstances surrounding the disaster.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the Nigerian Air Force said specialist divers from the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau were continuing underwater search and recovery operations at the accident site in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State. The aircraft, identified by registration number NAF 931, crashed on October 5 while carrying 25 people, comprising five crew members and 20 passengers. The Air Force said additional components had been recovered and were being documented and preserved to support the ongoing investigation.

The Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, explained that the recovery operation involved personnel from several agencies working together to locate aircraft materials in difficult underwater conditions. He said the teams were maintaining continuous efforts to retrieve relevant evidence while ensuring that recovered components were properly documented for examination.

According to the Air Force, the operation is supported by hydrographic surveys, satellite-based search-and-rescue imagery, excavation of mud and the pumping out of excess water. These techniques are being used to identify areas of interest and improve access to sections of the crash site where parts of the aircraft may remain submerged.

Hydrographic surveys provide information about underwater conditions and the physical characteristics of submerged areas. Such information can assist recovery personnel in identifying obstacles and planning searches. Satellite imagery provides additional geographical information, while excavation and water removal allow investigators to examine locations that might otherwise remain inaccessible.

The military said the combined operation was continuing during both daytime and nighttime periods. Personnel from the Navy and the investigation bureau are working alongside the Air Force recovery team, with specialist divers concentrating on submerged areas while other personnel support the retrieval and preservation of materials.

The Air Force confirmed that more aircraft components had been recovered but did not identify the individual parts or disclose the quantity retrieved during the latest operation. It also did not announce the discovery of any particular component that could independently establish the cause of the accident.

The recovery of wreckage is an important stage in an aviation accident investigation because aircraft components may contain physical evidence relating to the condition of the aircraft before impact. Investigators can examine recovered materials alongside maintenance documentation, operational records and other available evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events.

However, the discovery of additional wreckage does not establish why the aircraft crashed. Determining the cause requires technical examination and consideration of the evidence collected by the investigating authorities. The Air Force has not announced a final finding concerning the circumstances that led to the October 5 accident.

The latest announcement followed the constitution of a 12-member specialist Aircraft Accident Investigation Board by the Nigerian Air Force. The board was established to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash and recommend measures intended to prevent similar incidents.

The board's work is separate from the physical recovery operation, although evidence retrieved from the accident site may contribute to its findings. Its investigation is expected to consider relevant technical and operational information before reaching conclusions about the factors involved.

The crash has also attracted attention from the National Assembly. On Tuesday, October 13, the Senate called for a thorough investigation into the accident and urged the authorities to make the findings public.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Osita Ngwu, representing Enugu West Senatorial District and serving as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Air Force. Lawmakers expressed concern about the loss of lives and the need to examine aviation safety arrangements within the military.

The Senate called on the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the immediate and underlying circumstances of the crash. It also directed its Committees on Air Force and Aviation to visit the accident site and engage the relevant authorities.

Lawmakers further urged the Federal Government to prioritise funding for aircraft maintenance and the replacement of ageing military aircraft. The recommendations reflected broader concerns about aviation safety, although the Senate's call for maintenance improvements did not establish that a maintenance failure caused the Igbokoda crash.

Following the accident, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, directed senior commanders to strengthen oversight of aircraft airworthiness, maintenance quality and aircrew competence. The directive was issued during a meeting involving senior Air Force officers and commanders responsible for operational and administrative responsibilities.

The meeting focused on compliance with established aviation procedures, professional discipline and continuous improvement in flight safety management. The Air Force presented the measures as part of its commitment to strengthening operational safety following the accident.

Meanwhile, the recovery operation has raised environmental and public health concerns among residents of Igbokoda and surrounding communities. Reports from the area indicated that residents had complained about offensive odours near the river and expressed concern about possible contamination following the crash.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa subsequently directed the Ministries of Environment and Health to undertake an extensive fumigation exercise around the affected river area. The directive was announced through the state's Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku.

The state government said the intervention was intended to reduce potential health risks and address concerns about possible waterborne diseases. The announcement followed complaints from residents who feared that conditions around the accident site could affect their environment and wellbeing.

However, the public health concerns should be distinguished from confirmed scientific findings. The reports reviewed did not establish that laboratory testing had identified contamination of the river or confirmed an outbreak of waterborne disease. The government's intervention was presented as a preventive response to concerns raised by the community.

The accident has placed considerable responsibilities on the agencies involved in recovery and investigation. While divers and technical personnel continue searching for aircraft components, investigators must preserve the evidence required to examine the circumstances of the crash.

The Nigerian Air Force has maintained that the operation will continue as personnel work to retrieve relevant materials from submerged and difficult-to-access sections of the site. The recovered components will form part of the evidence available to the authorities investigating the disaster.

For the families affected by the October 5 crash, the investigation remains an important process in establishing what happened. The latest recovery represents further progress in collecting physical evidence, but the cause of the accident remains undetermined pending the findings of the investigating authorities.
